Customer relationship management built to sit alongside Sage accounting and ERP

What is Sage CRM?

Sage CRM exists for one reason above all others: it connects to Sage accounting and ERP. Judged purely as a CRM against the modern market it is not the most compelling product available. Judged as the CRM that lets a salesperson see a customer's real credit position and order history from Sage 200 without leaving the record, it makes a great deal more sense.

What it does well

The finance integration is the whole argument. Sales teams working from live account data rather than a stale export make better decisions about who to chase and what to promise. Quotes and orders raised in CRM flow into the finance system without rekeying, and credit control has visibility of what sales has committed to. For a business already on Sage 200, this is a shorter and cheaper path than integrating a third party CRM.

Coverage across the customer lifecycle is reasonable. Sales pipeline and forecasting, email marketing campaigns, and a case management module for customer service, all in one place rather than three subscriptions.

Deployment flexibility is worth noting. Sage CRM can be run on premise, which is unusual now and occasionally decisive for organisations with data policies that rule out cloud only vendors.

Where it falls short

The interface shows its age against HubSpot, Pipedrive or Capsule, all of which are easier to adopt and quicker to configure. Sales teams are unforgiving about CRM usability, and a CRM nobody updates is worse than no CRM at all. Run a genuine pilot with real salespeople before committing.

Marketing automation is basic by current standards. If sophisticated nurture sequences and lead scoring matter to you, expect to run a dedicated marketing tool alongside it.

Pricing is not published and typically comes through a partner, so comparison against transparently priced cloud rivals takes effort you would not otherwise spend.

The UK detail that matters

The relevant UK questions here are data protection rather than tax. A CRM holds a large volume of personal data about named individuals at your customers, so confirm hosting location, retention controls and how the system supports subject access and erasure requests under UK GDPR. If you deploy on premise, that responsibility sits with you rather than with Sage.

Who should buy it

Businesses already running Sage 200 or Sage 50 who want CRM that connects to finance without an integration project. If you are not on Sage finance software, there is little reason to choose this over a modern cloud CRM, and several reasons not to.

Integration is the reason, not the UI

It was a far shorter project than integrating a third party CRM. Sales can see live credit position from Sage 200 without leaving the record.

Pros

It was a far shorter project than integrating a third party CRM.

Cons

Adoption was a fight until we made it the only route to quotes.
