Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Business Central is Microsoft's ERP for the mid sized business, the grown up successor to Dynamics NAV. It covers finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, projects and light manufacturing in one system, and its defining advantage is that it lives inside the Microsoft world that most UK businesses already run on. For a company standardised on Microsoft 365, that integration is a serious argument.

What it does well

The Microsoft integration is genuinely deep. Working from Outlook, exporting to Excel with a live connection back to the data, and sharing identity and security with the rest of Microsoft 365 removes friction that separate ERP systems create. For a Microsoft shop it feels like part of the estate rather than a bolt on.

The functional breadth is strong for the price. Finance, supply chain, sales, projects and reporting come together properly, and the Premium tier adds manufacturing and service management. Power BI reporting on top gives finance genuine analytical depth.

Per user pricing is transparent by ERP standards, with Essentials and Premium named tiers rather than a pure quote, and a large UK partner network to implement it.

Where it falls short

It is still an ERP, so implementation is a project, not a signup. Partner cost, data migration and configuration dominate the first year, and the per user licence is only part of the total. Choosing the wrong partner is the most common way it goes badly.

The interface, while modernised, carries some of its NAV heritage, and staff moving from a consumer grade tool need training.

Smaller businesses whose need is really just accounting will find it heavier and more expensive than Sage 50 or a cloud ledger.

The UK detail that matters

Business Central handles UK VAT and Making Tax Digital natively, which is a real advantage over ERPs that need partner development for UK compliance. It is well supported by UK partners and integrates with the Microsoft estate a UK business already runs. Pricing is per user per month, Essentials around fifty three pounds and Premium around seventy five, and prices exclude VAT. Confirm current figures with a partner as Microsoft adjusts them periodically.

Who should buy it

Mid sized UK businesses, especially those standardised on Microsoft 365, that need a full ERP covering finance and operations rather than just accounting. Businesses whose need is purely accounting should stay on Sage or a cloud ledger, and those with heavy manufacturing should compare against Sage X3 and dedicated manufacturing ERPs.
