Sage's enterprise ERP for complex manufacturing and distribution businesses
Sage X3 is the top of the Sage range and a different category of purchase from everything below it. It is enterprise resource planning for organisations running complex manufacturing or distribution across multiple sites and countries, and it is bought after a formal selection process rather than a free trial.
Manufacturing depth is the reason it wins deals. Multi level bills of material, works orders, capacity planning, quality control and full traceability from raw material through to delivered product. Regulated industries such as food, beverage and pharmaceutical need batch traceability and recall capability as a matter of law, and X3 handles it as core functionality.
International operation is properly supported. Multiple legislations, currencies and languages in one instance, with local statutory reporting, which is exactly the requirement that eliminates mid market products for a group with subsidiaries abroad.
It is also fast for its class. X3 has a reputation for handling high transaction volumes better than several rivals of similar scope, which matters for distributors processing thousands of order lines a day.
Cost and complexity, both substantial. There is no published price, implementations are measured in months rather than weeks, and the total programme cost including partner services, data migration, integration and training will dominate the licence fee. This is a board level capital decision.
The interface has improved but remains dense. X3 is designed for trained operators doing the same task repeatedly, and it optimises for that rather than for discoverability. New staff need structured training.
The UK partner community for X3 is smaller than for Sage 200, so partner selection matters even more and your options may be fewer. Check the availability of local expertise in your sector before you shortlist.
For a UK manufacturer the things to nail down in the selection are Making Tax Digital submission, UK VAT treatment including any margin or reverse charge schemes you use, Intrastat and customs documentation if you move goods across borders, and where your data will be hosted. Get all of it specified in the contract rather than the sales deck.
Manufacturers and distributors with genuine multi site or international complexity, typically well above 200 employees, with a project team and budget to match. UK businesses without manufacturing or international requirements will get a better result from Sage 200 or Sage Intacct at a fraction of the cost and disruption.

Mixed. Batch traceability is a regulatory requirement for us and it handles it, but not something you buy without a full selection process.
Pros
Batch traceability is a regulatory requirement for us and it handles it.
Cons
Not something you buy without a full selection process.

It copes with our order volume where the last system slowed to a crawl. Only real gripe is that total cost is far beyond the licence.
Pros
It copes with our order volume where the last system slowed to a crawl.
Cons
