Cloud accounting for UK small businesses, with payroll and an AI assistant included in every plan
Sage Accounting is the product most UK small businesses mean when they say they are on Sage rather than Xero or QuickBooks. It is the cloud replacement for what used to be called Sage One and then Sage Business Cloud Accounting, and in 2026 it has become a noticeably different proposition: payroll and an AI assistant are now included in every plan rather than sold alongside.
Bundling payroll changes the maths. Start and Standard include one employee, Plus includes five, and additional employees run at £1.85 each per month. For a director who pays themselves a salary, or a small firm with a handful of staff, that removes an entire second subscription and an entire second system to reconcile. Rivals charge separately for this, and once you add it up the comparison narrows considerably.
The VAT and MTD handling is mature, which is what you would expect from a vendor that has been filing UK returns for four decades. CIS is supported on Standard and above, which matters if you are in construction and have watched cheaper tools handle deductions badly. Bank reconciliation, recurring invoices and cash flow forecasting all work the way an experienced bookkeeper expects them to.
Sage Copilot, the built in assistant, is more useful than most vendor AI. Automatic invoice chasing that drafts a reminder in your own tone, mistake detection before a VAT submission, and payroll anomaly spotting are all narrow, checkable jobs rather than a chat box bolted onto a sidebar.
The Start tier is tight. One user, no quotes or estimates, no cash flow forecasting, no CIS and no receipt capture at all. At £20 per month excluding VAT it is priced against competitors whose entry plans do more, and most businesses that look at Start end up on Standard at £43. Read the feature grid carefully before you assume the headline price is the price you will pay.
Receipt capture is metered rather than unlimited. Standard includes 30 captures a month and Plus includes 100, with anything beyond that charged at 20p per approved capture. That is fine for a quiet month and irritating in a busy one.
The reporting is competent but not deep. If you want genuinely flexible management reporting you will find yourself exporting to a spreadsheet more often than you would like, which is usually the point at which people start looking at Sage 50 Accounts or Intacct.
Sage lists the product as Making Tax Digital compatible, with assisted VAT submissions, CIS management and submission on the paid tiers, and pension auto enrolment inside the bundled payroll. All prices are quoted excluding VAT, which is standard for UK SaaS but worth remembering when you budget. Support is by telephone from Sage's UK team, and there is a heavy discount running at the time of writing.
UK limited companies and VAT registered sole traders with up to roughly twenty staff who want accounting and payroll from one supplier. Compare it against Xero and QuickBooks on total cost including payroll rather than on the headline subscription, because that is where Sage currently wins.

Receipt capture is metered and 30 a month goes quickly in a busy period, and the interface changed twice in a year and retraining staff is a cost. Having payroll included saved us a second subscription entirely, which is about the only positive.
Pros
Having payroll included saved us a second subscription entirely.
Cons
Receipt capture is metered and 30 a month goes quickly in a busy period.

The interface changed twice in a year and retraining staff is a cost, and adding employees to payroll pushes the monthly cost up faster than expected. VAT returns submit cleanly and the MTD side has never given us trouble, which is about the only positive.
