What it does well

The experience is the strength. CharlieHR is clean, quick to set up and pleasant to use, and for a startup that wants HR handled without hiring an HR person that matters. Leave, records, onboarding and simple reviews are all present and the whole thing feels built rather than assembled.

The HR advice add on is a genuine differentiator. For a company with no HR function, paying for access to real HR guidance, handbook creation and compliance checks alongside the software can be more valuable than any feature, because the moment you need it is usually a moment that carries real risk.

Headcount band pricing keeps it affordable for the smallest teams, starting at twenty pounds a month for one to four people and scaling by band.

Where it falls short

Like Breathe, it is built for small and growing rather than large and complex. Big organisations with intricate approval structures, deep analytics needs or global operations will outgrow it, and the per band cost climbs at the top end.

There is no payroll, so that lives in a separate product. The Recruit and Advice add ons require an active Core subscription and cannot be bought standalone, so the real cost of the full package is higher than the entry price.

Performance and analytics are lighter than the mid market suites, which is fine for the target customer and limiting for anyone beyond it.
