Self Assessment and MTD for Income Tax for people who have never used accounting software
Sage Sole Trader exists because of one deadline. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is landing on self employed people who have filed a Self Assessment on paper or through a spreadsheet for years, and HMRC now wants quarterly digital updates instead. Sage built this product for exactly that person: someone who has never opened accounting software, does not want a general ledger, and needs to be compliant without hiring anyone.
The scope is the strength. It records income and expenses, categorises them against the Self Assessment boxes, and produces the quarterly submission. It does not try to be a full bookkeeping package, and that restraint is what makes it usable in an evening. If your affairs are one trade, one bank account and a shoebox of receipts, the shape of the software matches the shape of the problem.
The free tier deserves attention. For non VAT registered sole traders, Sage offers an HMRC recognised app at no cost, which is unusual from a vendor this size. Most rivals treat MTD for Income Tax as a reason to move people onto a paid subscription. Being able to keep compliant digital records for nothing, then pay only when the business outgrows it, is a fair deal and worth testing before you commit to anything.
You will outgrow it, and Sage knows that. There is no double entry ledger, no purchase order workflow and no stock. The moment you register for VAT, take on staff or start invoicing in a second currency, you are looking at Sage Accounting instead. Treat this as a first step rather than a destination, and check how the data moves across before you build two years of records in it.
It is also a young product competing against tools that have had a decade of refinement. Landlords and sole traders with more than one income stream should test the quarterly update flow against their own numbers during the trial rather than assuming it will fit.
This is a UK product for a UK tax problem, so the alignment is close. Sage lists it as HMRC recognised, and the paid tier runs at £7 per month excluding VAT with the free tier aimed at sole traders below the VAT threshold. Support is telephone based from Sage's UK operation, which counts for a lot the week a quarterly update is due.
Sole traders and landlords who need to satisfy MTD for Income Tax with the least possible ceremony. If you already run VAT returns, employ anyone, or want proper management reporting, skip this and read our Sage Accounting review instead.

My accountant can see the figures without me emailing spreadsheets, and the tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock. The mobile app occasionally logs me out mid entry, but we live with it.

HMRC submission went through first time with no error messages, and categorising expenses on the phone while sat in the van works well. Importing two years of history from a spreadsheet was fiddly, but we live with it.
Pros
HMRC submission went through first time with no error messages.
Cons
Importing two years of history from a spreadsheet was fiddly.
